I just went through this new ebook that debunks popular SEO theories.
The author goes through popular SEO myths and theories and actually puts them through various tests. Like many theories and myths, people don't necessarily provide evidence for their theories and if the creator of the theory has a degree of reputation, those theories tend to become accepted as fact or law.
SEO is not rocket science and is not a technical practice at all. Sometimes it involves some programming, but for the average web author it doesn't have to be that way.

Jerome, I suggest you get the report. It goes against a couple of things you have written about in your hubs.
Retireyoung I found that book a few days ago its an interesting read and as you say has some different takes on things such as backlinks and updated content - though I must say I havent worked thru all the proofs yet
