I have had the opinion for a long time that it is better to do all of your writing on your own website. While having your own website is still important, only relying on your own website for promotion, you are limiting your potential audience.
If your goal is to become a freelance writer, I believe it is important to have a profile and collection of writing at all of the major article websites, like Hubpages, Infobarrel and Ezinearticles.
Writing articles on Hubpages is a great way to learn how to write for the internet. I think there is a big difference between writing for a printed publication like a magazine or a newspaper and writing for the internet. Newspapers are only discovering this now and it is very much a case of too little, too late.
Success on the internet is typically judged by how much traffic a website or article receives. Internet writers know the importance of keyword research and for breaking news items anticipated keyword searches.
By doing keyword research, writers can see exactly what people are searching for to find information.
Why traditional newspaper editors failed to transition to the internet is that they have or had no idea about keyword research. Bloggers and internet writers understand this, even if they are only doing it intuitively.
An example of this might be a newspaper printing the headline "Pop singer in car accident". When people hear that a particular celebrity has had a car accident, they won't be searching for "pop singer" but on the celebrity's name. Bloggers have already figured this out and it is not surprising that blogs and new media type sites will outrank long established newspaper businesses.
