How do Balinese name their children?

If you spend any time in Bali and make some friends with the local people, you will notice that many people have the same name.

The reason is that, there is a tradition of Balinese naming their children in the following way, regardless of whether they are a male or female.

The first born is named Wayan or Yan for short. The second born child is name Made and the third is Nyoman.

The fourth born child is named Ketut or Tut for short and if someone has a fifth child, it will be named Wayan Balik or Wayan again and the process starts over.

Balinese are also named according to caste.  Ida Ayu for example, means 'your beautiful highness' and is or a female brahmana.

The way different cultures name their children is an interesting topic. I note that Chinese children's names have more meaning than those in the west.

I wish to visit Bali and learning a small part of the culture is helpful. I liked the length - sometimes too much detail is daunting - very well done Hub - unique and memorable.
